Dorothy Cohen Fine Arts Initiative
The Dorothy Cohen Fine Arts Initiative provides arts programming for disadvantaged children in Chicago and the Chicagoland area. The program was established in 1996, in memory of Dorothy Cohen, an NCJW member and lover of children and the arts. The mission of the Dorothy Cohen Fine Arts Initiative is to enrich the lives of children with little or no access to arts education by providing opportunities for students to view and participate in the performing and visual arts.

From 1997 – 2002, the Initiative granted funds to a variety of Chicago-area schools and social service agencies. In 2003 the Initiative began offering instructions in art, dance and theater to children from the Highland Park Community Day Care Center and Tri-Con Child Care Center.

Clowning Around
Clowning around is an NCJW traveling performance troupe which entertains special needs children’s groups. This group of volunteer women perform in schools throughout the Chicagoland area and suburbs. Efforts are specifically focused on schools that are financially deprived for children with special needs-mentally disabled, physically disabled, and emotionally challenged. The show’s primary themes are of caring, sharing, trusting, loving, listening to others and accepting people for whom they are. Clowning around encourages children to try to make each day a positive one. Clowning around performs during the academic year.

For more information or to perform with Clowning Around, contact communityservice@ncjwcns.org.

Ready for Reading
Volunteers work with Tri-Con Day Care Center children to help develop reading readiness before their enrollment in Highland Park or Highwood public schools. The program enhances preschoolers’ love of books and reading through reading, crafts, and dramatic play. Volunteers meet twice a month to plan the sessions and volunteer with the children. Volunteers are welcome as their schedule permits.

Tri-Con Child Care Center was established in 1971 through the collaborative efforts of the NCJW and Trinity Episcopal Church when a growing need for subsidized child care was recognized in the North Shore area. Tri-Con is a not-for-profit day care center which provides affordable quality child care for children of working parents. Fees are on a sliding scale determined by family income and size. Tri-Con open to all families, regardless of race, nation origins, religions, or ancestries who want their children learning and growing in a safe, nurturing and diverse environment.
